The census is an important tool to analyze demographics in the United States. From race to annual income, there are a variety of topics being covered. However, sexual orientation is a subject that has been rather omitted from the census. As a result, the LGBT population in the U.S. is harder to identify and can cause a shroud of uncertainty.
Gallup is a global analytics firm that has gathered data for over 80 years. Since 2012, they have been diligently conducting surveys that included a question about sexual orientation. This can help classify the survey respondents as LGBT and non-LGBT. The chart below expresses the current population percentages of the LGBT community in the U.S. based on Gallup’s data.
Not only does Gallup provide data on the LGBT population in the U.S., but they have also provided specific data on metropolitan areas with the most LGBT populations. As seen below, one can conclude that the west coast tends to have more metro areas with higher LGBT populations.
There is also data on metropolitan areas with the least LGBT populations, which has been depicted below.
Compared to the map with the most LGBT populations, this map shows that the metro areas with the least LGBT populations tend to be in the Midwest and South.
It’s very interesting to see how different areas in the United States depict different populations of the LGBT community. Could there be a possible change in this demographic? Only time will tell.
